    The beginning

    EFICE is part of the history of the country. Dr. Domingo Giribaldo was the first to produce sodium hypochlorite in South America. This significant milestone was key to health in our country, as the breadth of its use was a fundamental factor for Uruguay to become the first country in South America to eradicate cholera and typhus fever.

  • 1950 - 1980

    First chlorine-caustic soda and derivatives plant in Uruguay

    In the mid-20th century, in another significant event for the industry, EFICE built the first chlorine-caustic soda and derivatives plant in Uruguay, which has been a technological benchmark for the region since then. Moreover, a few years later, as an effect of local research, EFICE developed a new design for electrolysis cells that added important operational and environmental advantages and was successfully commercialized throughout the region.

  • 1980 - 1990

    ISO certification

    EFICE became one of the first industries in the country to be certified under ISO standards as part of its ongoing pursuit to produce derivatives that have greater added value, doing so with a high degree of professionalism, constant improvement and excellency in management.

  • 2000-2015


    During this period, the company’s production capacity grew 30 times. With a lot of 100% national work, commitment, investments and financial and human capital, EFICE is now in charge of purifying Uruguay’s entire water network and a large part of Rio Grande do Sul’s.

  • 2016

    Omega project

    It kick-starts the biggest nationally-funded industrial project in the history of Uruguay. Committed to a productive nation, to quality work and its development, we are motivated to continue innovating, re-structuring our chlorine-caustic soda plant to one with the best globally available technology and with Good Chemistry in economic, social and environmental matters.
