Nitric Acid
General characteristics
- Nitric acid is a corrosive and caustic product. It is a colorless to light yellow liquid with a characteristic odor. It is totally soluble in water, but pouring water on acid can cause temperature rise and dangerous splashes.
- It is an energetic oxidizing product. Reacts with organic substances. For its production, one of the most known methods is carried out by means of Ammonia Oxidation. The process consists of oxidizing the ammonia with air in the presence of a catalyst that is usually platinum, and then passing the result of this operation through absorption towers in order to hydrate the nitrogen oxides and turn them into Nitric Acid.
Applications
Among other uses, it stands out the cleaning of deposits in the dairy industry, in general in stainless steel equipment, electroplating and aluminum anodizing.
